The aim of the milking routine is to milk clean, dry teats with a correctly functioning milking machine as efficiently as possible, with minimal risk to udder health while maintaining milk quality. Milk buyers want low somatic cell counts and Bactoscan counts without any medicine residues. This article highlights the key points that we need to achieve at milking to produce good quality milk.

The development of machine milking in the late 1800’s enabled milk production to expand worldwide with a reduced work force leading to improved economies of scale and profitability. Regardless of how much the technology has become refined and, as an industry, we better understand the inter-relationship between cow, operator and machine, there remains room for continued improvement.
